Installation

Individual products or features must be installed through the Norton SystemWorks
install only.
If you have to install from a local drive, you must copy the entire contents of
the CD to the root of your hard drive. Otherwise, you will run into installation
problems.

Installation Notes

1 Run the file ACTIVATION.EXE on the disc and press GENERATE,
for receiving your installing serial number.
Use the obtained number during the installation.
2 When the installation is completed - disconnect from internet!
3 For activation of the programme chose - Activate my software by phone,
put the obtained PHONE REGISTRATION CODE into the cell of ACTIVATION.EXE
and press UNLOCK to get the ACTIVATION CODE.
4 Put the obtained ACTIVATION CODE into "Norton SystemWorks 2005" activation
window.
5 Connect to Internet and start working.

Click Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.
Select "Norton SystemWorks 2005 (Symantec Corporation)" or "Norton SystemWorks
2005 Premier (Symantec Corporation)" if using the Premier version.
Restoring an image from the recovery environment when Norton GoBack is running
---------------------------------------------------
If you are going to restore an image from the recovery environment, and you are
running Norton GoBack, then you will need to disable Norton GoBack when booting
to the Recovery Disk
How to save an MSI log file to troubleshoot install and uninstall issues
---------------------------------------------------
If Norton SystemWorks fails to install, we recommend saving the Norton
SystemWorks log file that is generated by default during your installation of
Norton SystemWorks. This will help the Symantec Support Team to resolve your
issue faster. After uninstalling Norton SystemWorks, there should be two Norton
SystemWorks 2005 log files. The Install log file should show an earlier date and
time and a smaller KB size. The Uninstall log file should show a later date and
time and a larger KB size.
To locate this log file:
1. Click on "Start > Run"
2. Type the following command: "%temp%" and click "OK"
3. This should automatically launch the Windows
temporary directory
4. Find a file called "Norton SystemWorks 2005 (Date) (Time).log" (or "Norton
SystemWorks 2005
Premier (Date) (Time).log" if Norton Systemworks Premier has been installed)

1. Installing under Windows 2000/Windows XP
-------------------------------------------
When Installing BootMagic from Windows 2000 or Windows XP, it is
recommended that you install to a FAT16 partition. If you install
to a FAT32 partition, the rescue diskettes will not see the BootMagic
partition. If you do install to a FAT32 partition, you can create
rescue diskettes from a Windows 98 or Windows Me machine; then the
disks will see the FAT32 BootMagic partition correctly.
2. Booting from Secondary Hard Disks
------------------------------------
To boot from a partition that is not on the first hard disk, you must
enable advanced partition hiding. When you select this option,
BootMagic hides all primary partitions except for the one you are
booting from. This option is turned off by default.
To enable advanced partition hiding, click Options > Advanced Partition
Hiding from the BootMagic configuration program.
3. Known Issues
---------------
- Problems with some removable media drives will cause
significant delays when booting your machine. If you are
experiencing long delays and you have a removable media
drive, make sure you have a cartridge in the drive when
you are booting your machine or configuring BootMagic.
- If you make a copy of the home partition using software such
as PartitionMagic(R) or Drive Image(R), you will end up with
two partitions that look like the home partition, and the
BootMagic configuration program will not run. If your hard
drive is in this state, you must boot with the BootMagic
rescue disk. The rescue disk will take you through the
steps needed to reconfigure BootMagic.
- You cannot install BootMagic on an NTFS partition.
- We recommend that you do not install BootMagic to a partition
that already has disk compression installed on it. If you
choose to install BootMagic to a partition with disk
compression, we recommend you uninstall the disk compression
software from your disk before installing BootMagic. For
information on uninstalling your disk compression software,
see your disk compression documentation.
If you decide to install BootMagic onto a drive with disk
compression, you must make sure the portion of the disk that
is not compressed (the host partition) is large enough for
BootMagic. BootMagic must be installed on the uncompressed
portion of your hard disk. For information on adjusting free
space from the compressed volume to the host partition, see
your disk compression documentation.
For BootMagic to operate correctly, ensure the disk compression
software is configured to make the host partition visible and
assign it a drive letter. If your host partition is set to
Hidden, BootMagic may continue to install, but you will not be
able to run the BootMagic Configuration program or uninstall
BootMagic. If BootMagic tries to install to a drive letter
that you are not aware you have, your system may have disk
compression software installed and it may have hidden the host
partition.
- To uninstall BootMagic manually, do the following:
Disable BootMagic in the BootMagic Configuration program by
unchecking the "BootMagic Enabled" check box and clicking the
"Save/Exit" button. Reboot your machine and delete the
\BTMAGIC.PQ subdirectory.
- If you are running Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows XP
on a computer with both SCSI and IDE hard disks, and you have
set your computer to boot from one of the SCSI drives, the
drives may appear in a different order in the BootMagic
Configuration program than they appear at boot time. This
can result in BootMagic failing to appear after installing
from Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows XP.
Also, menu items added to the BootMagic menu under Windows NT,
Windows 2000, or Windowx XP may not be found at boot time. As
a work-around, install BootMagic from Windows 9x or Windows Me
and run the BootMagic Configuration program from Windows 9x or
Windows Me.
- If you have a USB keyboard, you may not be able to use BootMagic.
If you have a USB mouse, you may need to use the keyboard
instead of the mouse to make selections in BootMagic.
4. Running from Rescue Disks
----------------------------
If you boot from the BootMagic rescue disks and they cannot
find the BootMagic configuration program, BootMagic will be
disabled and PQBoot will run instead. PQBoot will display the
primary partitions on the first hard disk, so you can boot the
computer. From PQBoot, choose an operating system where you
can access the BootMagic configuration program (preferably the
operating system where you installed BootMagic), then repair
BootMagic from within that operating system.
